The Podcast Origin Story
Mike launched Mike Murphy Unplugged in September 2015, writing 3,500-word scripts every single week and recording them word for word. That pace carried him through 155 consecutive episodes before he hit the wall and had to press pause — not to end the show, but to put it on the shelf while he kept building elsewhere. The podcast is also what led to a book, a Domestika course, a job at a podcast startup, and a long list of relationships in the podcast and creator world.
Content Creation Journey
While the podcast was paused, YouTube became Mike's workshop. The simple formula — learn something useful, fire up ScreenFlow, make a tutorial on the spot — resulted in over 1,700 videos across 10 years, including a 365-videos-in-365-days challenge in 2017. He also wrote hundreds of articles on Medium, rounding out a content trifecta of audio, video, and writing, and started calling himself a "tech handyman" for it.
The AI Transition
After a decade building an audience around Adobe and creative-tutorial content, pivoting to AI content meant real self-doubt: would an audience that expects After Effects tutorials follow along into topics like Hugging Face, vibe coding, and Claude Code? Mike made the leap anyway — learning Python, terminal commands, and automation workflows, and building an AI playground on a virtual private server to experiment in public.
RAG Systems Deep Dive
RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) is the current focus of Mike's AI work: building AI knowledge bases out of existing content so creators and small businesses can generate new material, develop course outlines, write scripts, and answer audience questions — all in their own voice, pulled from their own back catalog. That idea is the seed of what Mike calls the Mike Murphy Content Factory.
Becoming the RAG Handyman
The identity arc: Tech Handyman → Podcast Handyman → AI Handyman → RAG Handyman. The mission stays the same across every label — make complex systems accessible and practical for content creators and small businesses, not just engineers.

Years of creative work, Adobe podcasts, and more online person should consume. I had this burning desire to put myself out there, but I I loved podcasts, so I said, why I gave myself less than thirty days to figure out how to launch a podcast, how to record and edit in Adobe Audition, and without a clue of what I was doing. I published episode number one was one of the proudest moments I did not expect it to be easy, episode every single week. I would write these massive scripts that I would record word doing right now. I started by teaching podcasting struggles of building an online I made it to one hundred and before I hit the wall, and Now, I am a stickler for give up or fail. But it was really taking a toll full time in a podcast startup, podcast, by the way. This show also got me to write a book, Land me a course deal with Domestika. Mastika. It introduced me to a ton of and creator world. But as soon as the podcast of a burden than something that take a break. But one thing was for certain I I was just putting it on a The content creation machine. As soon as I publish episode number one, I committed myself to being a content creator and tutorial maker. So while the podcast was my workshop and priority. If I learned something useful, I tutorial on the spot. And this simple formula has hundred videos currently Over these ten years. And boy did those early But I worked really hard on my short, clear and concise tutorial style. And in twenty seventeen I sixty five videos in a row, I also wrote hundreds of my content creator trifecta of And when anyone asked me what I did, I just said I was a tech handyman because I was pretty much an octopus, dabbling in every tech nook and cranny I could find. Then the future came a knocking While I have been creating content consistently about tech and creativity for ten years plus, I've never been more excited about where tech is heading than I am right now with AI. Rag systems are the game changer for content creators, businesses, and pretty much everyone who's going to be using AI. What is rag? Well, Rag stands for retrieval Think of it as building a You take all of your content, transcript, every YouTube video, it into a database.
